SYSTEM 03 — FOOD
Grow. Measure. Recover. Improve.
The Sustainable Oasis food system is designed around measurable production rather than appearance alone.
Harvest, growing area, water use, energy demand and seasonal reliability should eventually become part of the same food-system record.
Values shown here come from the local Sustainable Oasis Control Room dataset and may be DEMO, ESTIMATED or MEASURED.
FOOD ARCHITECTURE
Six functions. One productive system.
Food resilience is not only about growing something. It is about understanding what resources were required, what was produced and whether the process can be repeated.
Prepare
Select growing methods, crops, soil or nutrient systems appropriate to the site.
Grow
Manage water, nutrients, light, temperature and growing conditions.
Harvest
Record actual usable production rather than projected output.
Measure
Compare harvest with land, water, energy and time.
Recover
Return nutrients, organic matter and suitable water to productive cycles where practical.
Improve
Compare seasons and growing methods to identify what deserves to be replicated.
PRODUCTION
Measure the harvest.
Food systems become easier to improve when real production is recorded consistently.
Harvest mass can then be compared with growing area, water consumption and operating conditions.
Food Production CalculatorGROWING METHODS
Use the right method for the right context.
Sustainable Oasis does not need one universal growing method. Different sites may benefit from different combinations.
Soil Growing
Improve soil structure, organic matter, moisture retention and biological health.
Hydroponics
Grow plants without soil using controlled nutrient solutions and recirculating water where appropriate.
Aquaponics
Explore integrated fish and plant systems while measuring water quality, feed and production.
Controlled Growing
Greenhouses and protected growing spaces can extend seasons and improve environmental control.
LAND PRODUCTIVITY
Measure output per growing area.
A larger garden is not automatically a more productive garden. Comparing harvest with active growing area helps reveal how effectively space is being used.
FOOD + WATER
Every harvest has a water story.
Measuring irrigation demand alongside production helps us understand which growing systems produce useful food with lower water demand.
The purpose is not to chase one universal number, but to compare our own systems under similar conditions.
WATER RECOVERY
Keep useful water in the productive loop.
Food systems can often benefit from captured rainwater, recirculated growing water or suitable recovered water.
Rainwater
Capture roof runoff and use it for appropriate irrigation applications.
Rainwater Calculator →Recirculation
Reuse water within hydroponic or aquaponic loops where system design allows.
Suitable Reuse
Evaluate appropriate treated water reuse according to crop, application and water quality.
Measure Recovery
Quantify actual recovered volume instead of assuming that a recirculating system has eliminated losses.
FOOD + ENERGY
Food resilience also has an energy cost.
Pumps, lighting, fans, refrigeration, heating and automation can increase production while also creating electrical demand.
Water Movement
Pumps may be required for irrigation, hydroponics and aquaponics.
Supplemental Light
Artificial lighting can extend production but must be justified by useful output.
Environmental Control
Fans, heating and cooling affect both crop conditions and system energy use.
Preservation
Refrigeration and storage can reduce food loss while adding electrical demand.
NUTRIENT LOOP
Organic resources can become inputs again.
Food scraps, plant residue and other suitable organic materials can potentially return nutrients and organic matter to productive systems instead of becoming waste.
FOOD MEASUREMENT
Build a record that becomes more useful every season.
The long-term value is not one harvest. It is the dataset created by repeating the same measurements.
Harvest
Record usable food produced by crop and period.
Area
Record the actual growing area supporting production.
Water
Track irrigation and recirculation volumes.
Energy
Track electrical demand where growing systems require powered equipment.
Time
Document season, growing cycle and relevant labour.
